Toastmasters Speech 2: Organizing your speech

If change is for good! Change is good

As a kid, I got a real kick out of engaging my mom in endless debates intended to manipulate her into letting me do what I wanted, like staying out late or playing gully cricket with friends. I’d just wear her down until she capitulated. If she didn’t, I did what I wanted anyway and begged for forgiveness later. It drove her nuts. How many of us did this?

Moreover, It was a pretty effective strategy that served me well for quite a few years. It even worked on teachers, girlfriend and a college professor or two. But I always knew there would come a day when my little game would come to an end. Suffice to say that sort of childish behavior doesn’t go over too well in the real world. The real business world expects results. If you do great work and amaze your bosses or customers you will be richly rewarded. If not, you won’t. End of story!

OK, it’s not exactly that black and white, but for those of you who think you can thwart the system and cajole, bend, or manipulate your way to fame and fortune, here’s a true story that just might dissuade you. Steve Jobs has spoken publicly about how the personal and public humiliation of getting fired from Apple was like getting hit in the head with a brick. For most of us it might be difficult to wear his shoes but for sure we can relate to that. The thought of getting dumped by the company that had enough faith in you. Nevertheless, Years after Jobs also said it was the best thing that could have happened to him.

Additionally, the lesson I construe is that people play games. We all do! We mostly do it as children but, for many of us, old habits die hard. Sooner or later we learn that life is not a game and the real world has a harsh way of dealing with those who think they can outsmart it. Granted, you can get away with it for a while. But you will never, ever break through to become all you’re capable of being and do great things until that fateful brick comes out of nowhere and slams your head. And the truth is, the sooner that happens the better.

Coming to the part where we think that its difficult for us to be the best. To defy and overtake someone who is so naturally a winner. Change ourselves! I have a paragon for fellow toastmasters. How many of us have heard about bumblebee ! I will tell you about that. This small creature based on the theories of aerodynamics i.e. its weight, length of wings, its built etc and other venerated scientific principles, cannot fly! It simply can't! Why? Because mother nature built the bee in that way? It's fringe science for the bumblebee to fly. But the bumblebee, being unaware of these scientific facts, flies anyway! How and why? Well again the will power and the eagerness to fly have tuned their genes over generations to do that.

Coming back to our core topic, I feel, if change is for good, change is good! We must understand that before a flying brick hurts us (as it did incase of Steve Jobs) we need to improve ourselves. We must be aware of the real word and our own part in this competitive world. We should be able to market and present ourselves! We should have the power to shine like sun!

Why can we not tune ourselves? Why cannot we achieve that? How much is the life span of that bumblebee? 2-3 months. We live on an average 60-70 years? Can we not tune ourselves? Can we not accept the challenge? Based on the lifespan! I will leave to you for the maths!
And yup one more thing, better be on the lookout for flying bricks!

ToastMaster Table Topic

ToastMaster Table Topic
Theme revolves around Empathy

1) What is the most empathic experience you had in your life? It can be someone touched you or you clicked someone with lot of empathic energy you had.

2) Empathy is about considerate about feeling of others. We talk about helping needy and poor. In real world where era is so competitive is it even possible to be empathic?

3) So, he/she told about empathy and she says its real? You can be empathic despite being in an era of competition. Then what stops in general to be empathic? What are the general things which stop us?

4) Yesterday evening, this guy a product manager called me I was unable to receive his call as I was driving. Then he messaged me asking me to understand the pressure he is in. I reverted back to him and closed that bug. First of all, it was not my issue however I helped me. Only because I came think the term "corporate empathy" should not remain an oxymoron. What's your take on it? How can we show corporate empathy and how can it help a team? BTW Linkedin tops the chart and is the most empathic company.

That's great, let's talk about our experiences. On a daily basis, we come across news items and we feel that this should not good. We see people killing each other. We see terror! We see a small innocent child lying on the sea shore because he was one of the unfortunate refugees from Syria. I feel that this session should make us more considerate towards others. We should make the world better. If God has given us to understand this feeling lets try to apply it to our best and make this world a better place.

My Toastmasters Speech 1 Scratchbook

Toastmasters Speech 1: The Ice Breaker

        Fear is the key

                                          --- Rishi Verma

Hello, Toastmasters! I went through the manual and figured out that it mainly talks about building confidence to speak and getting rid of stage fear. To be succinct it talks about “Start”.
That made me inquisitive about the simple word “Start”, In fact it opened a new realm of understanding the word start. Before I talk about that, What comes to your mind or how do you feel, when you think about word “Start”. (Let the audiences get involved)

Well if I will marshal these thoughts of all of you,

It means Fear for someone of us, may be fear of the unknown in the equation when I am starting something new, marriage, relationship or may be a new job. For some it might mean Excitement, to do something new , actually try something new, try a new car, try a new cuisine. Well it makes you feel filled with sanguinity and vigor from top to bottom. You feel your heart pumping blood fast, you feel excited ( Motivate and make the audiences feel the pitch). You feel +ve energy all around you. You feel that moon of the night which makes you feel cool is in your nerves along with morning sun which makes you perfectly warm..not hot not cold.. you feel that..I feel that. This, energy when properly channelized works wonders. How many of you have felt that before ?

Lets talk about Fear, Most of us feel that too. I talked about fear of talking, fear of trying something new. Fear of speech, fear of job etcetera etcetera. Can you guys connect? Can you guys feel the paucity or uncertainty over finances which drives some of you to come to job daily. The fear which stops you to try a new relationship. I hope all of you must be well connected (Change the voice and smile).

Let us try, in this way. How many of us like sweet and salty food may be like lime soda? Cool...
Obviously, you know that sweet is Excitement and salt is... (let the audiences answer) , today we gonna consider opposite. Well, we must surpass the world where people used had the cliché, The glass is half filled with water and don't visualize it as half empty. Well obviously it shows a lots of positivity to say half filled of water. Reason, half filled if “+ve”! However, who said it is only half filled? Well its half filled with water and half filled with air. And my fellow Toastmasters “Air” was never negative! In fact it 100 times more essential than water. But we compared “Air” with negativity/fear. Was it right? If you take me, I am a similar kinda person who likes to takes things positive around myself.

What are we missing here? We need to understand, that actually fear is an integral part of life and its not negative. Fear is at par with excitement! So next time you are in a situation of conundrum, take fear as more essential one than excitement. Rate it sweet! Make it as a driving factor and don’t take fear or dilemma as negative. It was never negative! Since a person missed the train, does it makes the train negative? So, if you have to try a new job and you are fearful of that. Wh`at is negative in this? Job , you or something else. Frankly, speaking nothing is -ve here. Its only about touching upon all flavors of life as that keeps us satiated. That's what I am doing now, I am trying to enjoy my fear of stage and I am pretty excited to speak here. I am not a “Mozart of this trade”, However, you can for sure take it as a advice for all of you hesitated to stand up, we need to start and speak!

And that’s all which describes me. I am a person of the same nature,,,

Thanks a lot, You guys are such a wonderful audiences.
